アルバータ州の学校は、質の高い教育カリキュラムを実施し、世界的にも高い教育水準を保っています。OECD（経済協力開発機構）が3年毎に世界で実施する学習到達度調査（PISA）においても、図の結果のように安定して高い学習到達度を示しています。直近の2018年調査では、読解力（Reading）部門と科学（Science）部門ともに、アルバータ州は、カナダ州別第1位、世界の国別順位と比較しても、第1位のエストニアを上回る得点を挙げています。 日本においても、平成から令和へと新しい時代に代わり、グローバル化・高度情報化の時代にふさわしい教育改革・人材開発が求められています。しかし、アルバータ州教育省は2010年にはすでに州の教育ビジョンとして、「3つのE」、つまり「Engaged Thinker」、「Ethical Citizen」、「Entrepreneurial Spirit」を掲げていました。日本の新しい学習指導要領の考え方も同様の方向性を目指していますが、アルバータ州の教育カリキュラムは、学生の現在と将来の必要性を見据えて、10年以上前から、アクティブラーニング・STEAM教育などを実践しています。 また、アルバータ州の高校卒業資格は、北米全域だけでなく、世界各国で通用します。卒業生の多くはアルバータ大学やカルガリー大学などアルバータ州内の大学の他、カナダ国内や米国をはじめとする世界各地の有名大学に進学しています。

Alberta Education
Schools in Alberta maintain a world-class educational curriculum. Evidence of its distinction can be seen in the graph at the lower left. The OECD measures the academic stability and achievement of educational institutions through PISA. In the most recent 2018 survey, Alberta ranked first among Canadian provinces in both the Reading and Science sectors, with a higher score than Estonia, the world's largest country. A significant factor in the province’s academic excellence has been its instructional philosophy. In 2010, the Ministry of Education of Alberta set out "Three E's," namely "Engaged Thinker", "Ethical Citizen", and "Entrepreneurial Spirit", as provincial educational visions. These objectives aim to prepare students to be successful in modern society. Japan has also been demanding educational reforms to develop skilled workers for the complex period of globalization. Although new Japanese teaching guidelines and ideologies are headed in the same direction, Alberta’s academic program has been implementing active learning and STEAM education for more than 10 years. Moreover, its high school graduation qualifications match global standards, affording students a wide variety of options for their future studies. Many graduates go on to universities in Alberta, in addition to other famous universities around the world.

Message from Alberta Education
Alberta’s leading education program is recognized worldwide. In OECD’s Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), Alberta has consistently outperformed other countries and its neighboring provinces. According to 2015 PISA results, Alberta ranked 2nd in the world (1st in Canada) for science (Japan ranks 7th). Canada outranked even Singapore, which is ranked top in the world for their overall score, in science while also ranking 2nd in Canada for reading.

Japan is currently in the middle of the greatest educational reform since the war. University entrance exams will be changed in 2020, and junior and senior high school teaching guidelines are being re-examined in order to better prepare students for the fast-paced changes in technology and globalization that our society is currently undergoing. Canada has already been implementing such reforms in each of its provinces since the 1990s.

Numerous aspects of the three E’s (Engaged Thinker, Ethical Citizen and Entrepreneurial Spirit) instilled by Alberta Education as part of their education vision in 2010 overlap with the educational reform that the Japanese Ministry of Education is aiming to complete by the year 2020. Having started this reform ten years ahead of Japan by incorporating active learning and STEAM education into their curriculum, it is a true testament to how accomplished and cutting-edge Alberta’s education really is.

Earning a high school diploma from Alberta is acclaimed in both North America and internationally. Graduates have earned a spot at in-province universities, such as the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary, along with other prestigious institutions in Canada and around the world.
