Alberta Program

Schools in Alberta maintain a world-class educational curriculum. Evidence of its distinction can be seen in the graph at the lower left. The OECD measures the academic stability and achievement of educational institutions through PISA. In the most recent 2018 survey, Alberta ranked first among Canadian provinces in both the Reading and Science sectors, with a higher score than Estonia, the world's largest country. A significant factor in the province’s academic excellence has been its instructional philosophy. In 2010, the Ministry of Education of Alberta set out "Three E's," namely "Engaged Thinker", "Ethical Citizen", and "Entrepreneurial Spirit", as provincial educational visions. These objectives aim to prepare students to be successful in modern society. Japan has also been demanding educational reforms to develop skilled workers for the complex period of globalization. Although new Japanese teaching guidelines and ideologies are headed in the same direction, Alberta’s academic program has been implementing active learning and STEAM education for more than 10 years. Moreover, its high school graduation qualifications match global standards, affording students a wide variety of options for their future studies. Many graduates go on to universities in Alberta, in addition to other famous universities around the world.

Alberta Education’s accredited schools follow a common and rigorous curriculum. The province follows an excellent curriculum combined with strong assessment practices. Students in grade 9 will take provincial achievement tests (PATs) to evaluate their grade-level standards. In Grade 12 these students will then write provincial exams to obtain their Alberta high school diploma. This diploma provides students with an opportunity to enter universities throughout Canada, North America, and abroad.

In our double diploma program students learn English as a means of communication and expression. It is a dual language program. We follow a scaffolded approach with grade 7 students taking English Language Arts classes and the rest of their instruction being in Japanese. In grade 8 students are exposed to social studies, science, and math in English as well as their full English Language Arts class. Then in grade 9 students have all their core classes in English with physical education and option classes also led by qualified Alberta teachers. The goal being that students have increased English fluency by the time they enter grade 9 and are taking the complete Alberta program of studies. These classes will further support students in learning the important skills of critical and creative thinking, social literacy, numeracy, and last but not least physical literacy. The goal of this program is for students to foster teamwork and collaboration, enhance self-esteem and problem solving skills, and to deepen their understanding of living in a connected and globalized world.
